Brussels Airport unveils its Strategic Vision

Brussels Airport has developed its Strategic Vision 2040 that is supported by a long-term development plan for the airport itself and for Belgium as a whole. Now that airports have become the major growth engines of the economies of the 21st century, this strategic vision aims to give our country the tools to grab the massive opportunities that the next decades will bring and double the number of airport-related jobs to 120,000 by 2040.

The development of Brussels Airport will lead to more destinations for our passengers and more export and import opportunities for our businesses, allowing Belgium to continue to play its leading international role, whether on an economic, diplomatic or cultural level.

This balanced approach constitutes the very foundation of the Strategic Vision 2040.

Cargo Figures

Brussels Airport has seen a difficult start in 2016 for its cargo figures, with a small decline in Q1 compared to last year. Figures saw a sharp decline in Q2 due to the terrorist attacks on March 22nd. As of May, figures started to recover again, especially those volumes transported on full freighter aircraft.

Since August, we are seeing again good overall growth figures of 6 to 8% per month . Full cargo volumes are making up for the loss in belly volumes due lower capacity and less wide body long haul flights. Especially Ethiopian Cargo, Singapore Airlines Cargo, Qatar Airways Cargo, Etihad Cargo and Emirates Skycargo are contributing to this growth compared to last year.

Thanks to our new BRUcloud application, we not only have accurate data available, we also have more details on segments and flows to and from different areas. This data supports our commercial activities but also learns us a lot on which segments are increasing or not, what destinations are growing and how strong or the average weight evolution of shipments. Supported by this data, together with Air Cargo Belgium, we have a better idea on which projects we have to focus to strengthen BRUcargo.

Air Cargo Belgium: update

With 10 new members last month, Air Cargo Belgium is growing fast. Amongst it activities, Air Cargo Belgium want to inspire people working in cargo and creating networking moments. Therefore, we created “cargo talks”. A few times per year, we organise an evening network event and invite an inspiring speaker. To kick of, we had a top speaker in the field of “radical innovation”: Peter Hinssen (www.peterhinssen.com). Peter took us on a ride in the world of digitisation and innovation. Confronting for most of us in the cargo industry, but inspiring for sure! It will be a challenge to find a next speaker meeting our standards set out in this first session. Something to look forward too!
