Carriers ‘play hardball’ with new Asia-Europe and transpacific rate hikes

Ocean carriers have finally succeeded in lifting container spot rates on the key Asia-Europe and transpacific tradelanes.
Today’s Shanghai Containerised Freight Index (SCFI) shows a 19% uplift in spot rates from Asia to North Europe as carriers’ 1 November FAK increases were partially accepted by shippers.
The North Europe component of the SCFI jumped to $707 per teu, which is just 6% below the level of 12 months ago.
