TIACA’s 2020 Air Cargo Sustainability Award Winners

The unveiling of the winners of TIACA’s second Air Cargo Sustainability Awards happened online this year, at the end of the sixth and final digital Air Cargo Forum webinar on 10DEC20.
With verbal drumrolls and much excitement provided by Celine Hourcade, CHAMP Cargosystems CEO, Chris McDermott declared Pelican BioThermal as the winner in the Corporate category, and
congratulated Nepal Flying Labs on winning in the Start-Up category.

The TIACA Air Cargo Sustainability Awards aim to celebrate and encourage outstanding industry initiatives which improve sustainability in air cargo. The independent jury consisting of TIACA’s
Sustainability Strategic Partnership members, including CHAMP Cargosystems – the sponsor of the awards since they started in 2019, Turkish Cargo, TRANSOM, Brussels Airport, and Flexport, as well
as TIACA’s members, had the unenviable task of selecting first the runners-up from the 27 entries, and then the trickier one of whittling the final three in each category down to the ultimate
winner.

Everyone’s a winner, Baby, that’s for sure!
The six finalists pitched their solutions during an earlier TIACA digital Air Cargo Forum (ACF) webinar on 02DEC20 (CFG reported: https://www.cargoforwarder.eu/2020/12/06/who-will-win-the-2020-sustainability-awards/). Céline
Hourcade, Transition Director and Head of Sustainability Program, TIACA, emphasized her congratulations to all those who had entered, and especially to the finalists: “All participants
presented innovative and diverse solutions advancing sustainability in air cargo industry, including carbon and waste reduction, drones, humanitarian aid, packaging, ULDs, process efficiencies,
people focus and COVID-19 relief. In a year marked by a global pandemic which disrupted our industry, problem solving and forward-thinking companies like Pelican BioThermal and Nepal Flying Labs
bring hope that air cargo can come out of this crisis stronger and more resilient. Congratulations to all the winners and I look forward to seeing what the future holds for these
companies.

Pelican BioThermal is the Corporate winner
The Corporate prize ,which is a one-year free membership in the TIACA Strategic Partnership Program, worth $10,000, was accepted by Adam Tetz, Director of Worldwide Marketing at Pelican
BioThermal who said “I am thrilled to accept this award on behalf of Pelican BioThermal,” pointing out that Pelican BioThermal’s affordable, sustainable and reusable packaging solutions
for Life Science materials have been around since 10 years and that “key points to this class of temperature control packaging are less carbon emitted during transport due to smaller size,
less landfill due to reuse, easily recyclable components, and less land use due to a reduction in necessary warehouse space.
” Pelican BioThermal’s latest solution, and the one which won the
award, is the durable and reusable temperature-controlled CrēdoTM cargo unit, which is coming into its own now in the various Covid-19-related transports.

Nepal Flying Labs tops the Start-up category
As a Start-up winner, Nepal Flying Labs which had entered its Drone Optimized Therapy System (DrOTS) for the transport via drone of humanitarian and medical cargo to remote and hard to reach
locations in Nepal, takes home a $10,000 cash prize. BeOn IoT and Drone Delivery Canada, the Start-up runners-up, each receive $2,500.
Biplav Pageni accepted the award on behalf of Nepal Flying Labs, “Thank you to all the TIACA members for voting and having faith in us; the credit goes to my team at Nepal Flying Labs.
He thanked TIACA for having had the opportunity to showcase what his company was doing. “It was said earlier in the webinar that drones are future of air cargo, but I believe they are the
present
”, and called for companies willing to partner with Nepal Flying Labs to make even more of an impact in helping the vulnerable population in Nepal get life-saving supplies.

CHAMP Cargosystems is a keen sponsor
It is a real honor for us to support the Sustainability Program and we are proud of our strategic partnership with TIACA and our exclusive sponsorship of these important Awards. The
Coronavirus pandemic is perhaps the biggest challenge our industry has faced but it is also an opportunity for a new beginning. Digitalization, innovation, and new technology are all elements
that should be incorporated in our business plans and thinking to build a more sustainable future,”
Chris McDermott, CEO of CHAMP Cargosystems, said, pointing out that sustainability and
innovation are two very important concepts that are intertwined and a part of CHAMP’s own company philosophy.

While the awards had to be announced online this year, “an in-person ceremony is planned at the next physical TIACA event in 2021 following the loosening of the COVID-19-related
restrictions.
